Study Visit to ttz Bremerhaven Highlights Innovation and Collaboration in Fish Feed Development

On 26 February 2026, as part of the AquaLoop Interreg South Baltic Final Conference in Bremerhaven, participants took part in a dedicated study visit to the Technology Transfer Center (ttz) Bremerhaven.

The visit brought together representatives from research institutions and project partners for an in-depth look at the centre’s pilot plant facilities and technological capabilities. A key focus of the visit was the production of experimental fish feed using extrusion technology, offering valuable insights into practical applications supporting circular aquaculture.

During the visit, the pilot plant facilities were toured and in-depth discussions were held on the production of experimental fish feed using extrusion technology. The entire process chain was presented, including the milling of raw materials, preparation of precise mixtures, various drying options, and coating via vacuum coating. All of these processing steps can be realized at ttz Bremerhaven.

In addition, broader extrusion possibilities were explored, and product samples such as texturized vegetable protein (TVP), snacks, pasta, cereals, and fish feed were reviewed. A detailed introduction to the CLSM microscope was also provided, including the presentation of specific images and an overview of both the challenges and opportunities associated with this analytical method.

Another highlight of the visit was the bakery area, where the fresh bread aroma made a strong impression and contributed to a welcoming atmosphere.

Several promising starting points for future collaboration were identified, particularly in the field of fish feed development. The strong interest and the high level of technical discussion made the visit especially valuable for all participants.
