Klaipeda University (Lithuania) was thrilled to host a group of students from the University of Gdańsk (Poland) for the exciting “AquaLoop Cross-Border Student Exchange Program” from February 23th to March 1st, 2025. Over the course of this dynamic week, participants were immersed in the cutting-edge AquaLoop Pilot 3: FISHVISA pilot, which focuses on developing an integrated aquaponics system combining fish, shrimp, and vegetables—showcasing the transformative potential of circular economy principles in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS).
The program gave students the opportunity to explore state-of-the-art facilities, including the Marine Research Institute and the Fisheries and Aquaculture Laboratory, where they engaged in hands-on activities that spanned across multiple disciplines. They delved deep into the world of aquaponics and multitrophic aquaculture systems, mastering water quality analysis, fish and crayfish growth measurements, aquaponic plant evaluations, and shrimp feeding and sorting—all within a fast-paced and enriching week.
Beyond their technical learning, the students enjoyed an eye-opening study trip to the Martynas Klevinis Fish Farm’s pikeperch breeding facility and the Lithuanian Sea Museum, further expanding their understanding of sustainable aquaculture practices.
The exchange program was an outstanding success, creating lasting connections and valuable learning experiences for both the AquaLoop team at Klaipeda University and the visiting students from Gdańsk. The program received a perfect 100% rating, with students praising the communication, organization, collaboration, and networking opportunities provided. Their feedback was full of highlights and personal reflections, underscoring the program’s positive impact and the deep impressions made during their time in Klaipeda.
Some highlights of the program mentioned by the participants:
“…Learning about aquaponics from the inside and understanding its importance. Having the opportunity to work with hydroponics for the first time. Crayfish meassurements …”
Some experiences from the program mentioned by the participants:
“…It was an amazing experience and the whole organisation and activities were great. Thanks to the project staff. …”
