TARAS Pilot: Microalgae for Circular Shrimp Aquaculture

As part of the AquaLoop project, the TARAS Pilot – Testing Algae Applications in Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) to improve aquaculture circularity potential in the SB region developed and demonstrated a circular aquaculture system combining shrimp recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) with microalgae-based wastewater treatment.

The pilot explored how microalgae could be used to remove dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus from shrimp processing water while simultaneously producing valuable algal biomass. In this way, nutrients that would otherwise become waste could be recovered and potentially reused, contributing to more efficient resource use and reduced environmental impacts.

The TARAS pilot generated practical experience and data on integrating microalgae into shrimp aquaculture systems, supporting the development of more sustainable and circular solutions suitable for the South Baltic region.

The results were translated into a practical protocol for circular aquaculture, providing guidance for applying the tested approach beyond the project.
