{"id":3043,"date":"2026-06-17T15:48:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T15:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aqualoop.edu.pl\/?p=3043"},"modified":"2026-06-17T15:58:53","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T15:58:53","slug":"aqualoop-workshop-on-market-potential-for-african-catfish-with-a-study-visit-to-protena-food-malmo-sweden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aqualoop.edu.pl\/?p=3043","title":{"rendered":"AQUALOOP Workshop on Market Potential for African Catfish with a Study Visit to Protena Food, Malm\u00f6, SWEDEN"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 10 June 2026 approximately 20 participants from academia, business and stakeholder organizations of the AquaLoop initiative gathered in Malm\u00f6 for a study visit and workshop hosted in collaboration with <strong>G\u00e5rdsfisk<\/strong> and <strong>Protena Food<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/protenafood.com\/\"><strong>Protena Food<\/strong><\/a> is a Swedish food production company specialising in the manufacturing of ready-made products such as meatballs, nuggets, and burgers. The company is part of an innovative and industrial food value chain and provides valuable insight into large-scale, modern food processing and daily production operations. Within the AquaLoop context, Protena Food serves as an important partner for exploring how new raw materials\u2014such as African catfish\u2014can be integrated into established production systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop was organised in close cooperation with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardsfisk.se\/\"><strong>G\u00e5rdsfisk<\/strong><\/a>, AquaLoop project partner, a pioneering Swedish aquaculture company working with sustainable fish farming in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS). G\u00e5rdsfisk plays a central role in developing and demonstrating how African catfish can be produced efficiently and integrated into circular food systems, creating value from nutrient loops and side streams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day\u2019s workshop, titled <strong>\u201cMarket Potential for African Catfish\u201d<\/strong>, focused on exploring the opportunities and challenges associated with introducing African catfish to European markets. The programme included: a study visit to Protena Food\u2019s production site in Malm\u00f6, insights into daily operations and requirements for food processing industries, presentation on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardsfisk.se\/\">G\u00e5rdsfisk<\/a> operations, how African catfish can function as a in industrial food production, perspectives from the public sector, and online retailers (<a href=\"https:\/\/mylla.se\/sv-se\">Mylla.se<\/a>) on introducing a new fish species to the market by Peter Ferng\u00e5rd, and a  final session on the role of RAS systems and local fish production in European contingency planning and food security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim of the day was to highlight the broad market potential of African catfish as an emerging industry species in Europe, while also demonstrating how innovative aquaculture systems and local production can strengthen resilient and future-oriented food systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Special thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardsfisk.se\/\">G\u00e5rdsfisk<\/a> for organizing the study visit and workshop, and <a href=\"https:\/\/protenafood.com\/\">Protena Food<\/a> for hosting AquaLoop.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 10 June 2026 approximately 20 participants from academia, business and stakeholder organizations of the AquaLoop initiative gathered in Malm\u00f6 for a study visit and workshop hosted in collaboration with G\u00e5rdsfisk and Protena Food.
